Engineers and staff from two long established and well known local companies, BSS and W Churches, recently came together on the pitch in a hard fought football game that was to honour a friend and colleague and raise money for charity. The game was originally conceived as a show of support for Mark Bocock who was suffering with cancer, and also to raise money in his name for the Wessex Cancer Trust. It was hoped that health permitting, he would be able to attend, but tragically Mark lost his brave fight on the Thursday prior to the game. It was decided that the game would go ahead as a tribute to Mark. The pitch was kindly donated by Southampton Sports Centre. The game began with a minutes silence as a show of respect for a friend and colleague.
The match started briskly with Churches taking a three goal lead but BSS hit back with a penalty and within five minutes had pulled another back, at half time the score was 4-3 in favour of Churches. Many of the players were the wrong side of forty so the break came none too soon!
The second half saw Churches move into a 7-4 lead only for BSS to peg them back again. The game was played in a good spirit and finished 12-7 to Churches.
A total of almost £300 was raised for the Wessex Cancer Trust.
