W Churches & Son experience life on board HMS Belfast

Plumbing and electrical specialists, W Churches & Son has proved that it’s just at home on water as on dry land. The Winchester company has recently been involved in the servicing and maintenance of the much-loved ship, HMS Belfast.

Part of the Imperial War Museum collection and moored in London, HMS Belfast is now over 70 years old and has very specific needs to keep her in first-class condition. Churches was invited to be involved in the servicing and maintenance of all ten of the niche direct fired warm air heaters, which provide heating to the exhibition areas and staff offices onboard.

When originally installed, the warm air heating system was cleverly incorporated into the existing ventilation ductwork to make it look like part of the ship. All working parts are hidden from view, making maintenance and servicing not always a simple task, as access can be limited.

Martin Perrins, Churches’ contract manager said: “Our engineers have had to work around visitors, in very cramped conditions and it has even been necessary, at times, to sleep on board in the mess bunks at night, which has given us all a whole new perspective! It has been a real thrill to work on this project. HMS Belfast played a major role in our history and we feel privileged to be involved with a national icon.”

Simon Brooks, electrical manager on HMS Belfast said: “This ship needs very careful handling as parts of her are very old and routine tasks are not always straightforward. It has been a pleasure to work with a team of such professional and reliable engineers.”
