Air Source Heat Pumps Made Easy

Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from air outside your home or business in just the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside.  Modern technology means that these pumps are so efficient that they can extract heat from the air even when the external temperature drops as low as minus 15 deg C.

There are two types of air source heat pumps; air-to-water systems which heats water to a lower temperature than a standard boiler, so is more suitable for underfloor heating systems.  Alternatively, an air-to-air system produces warm air, circulated by fans to heat homes and buildings.

Financial Benefit

With no need for groundworks, installation costs are kept to a minimum and are ideal for homes with limited outside space, or flats.  Air source heat pumps run on electricity, so this immediately cuts out gas, oil or solid fuel heating bills.  Air source heat pumps also cut down on wasted electricity as they are far more efficient than electric radiators.  The system will pay for itself more quickly if it replaces an electric, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) or coal heating system.  A typical return on investment is just five years and it is estimated that an average detached home can save up to £700 per year if an air source heat pump is installed to replace an electric heating system.

Environmental Benefit

An air source heat pump working efficiently in a well-insulated home or building can reduce energy consumption for heating by up to half, compared with conventional (fossil fuel) systems.  It will also reduce carbon emissions quite considerably.  It is estimated that the average home will save around five tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.
